State Roundup: Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan stand out as states needing more doe harvest, according to NDA review

Wisconsin deer hunters recently drew the attention of the National Deer Association (NDA) as that group tracks the annual deer harvest in each state and then compares antlerless deer kill to the buck kill as part of the group’s overall analysis of deer harvest.
I doubt NDA’s comment on Wisconsin’s pattern of deer kills is news to DNR deer program specialist Jeff Pritzl or any other DNR wildlife biologist. NDA maintains Wisconsin hunters aren’t shooting enough does when looking at the 2023 antlerless harvest.

Storm injures camper at Wisconsin’s Council Grounds State Park

One camper was injured, a truck was severely damaged, and numerous trees and branches were downed when strong winds swept through the campground at Council Grounds State Park Saturday, July 19.
The storm started after midnight with light rain. Around 4:30 a.m. the rain turned torrential, and hail was mixed in. At about 5 a.m. a brief, but intense, wind blasted the campground, knocking down numerous trees and branches. A tree fell on a tent with two campers inside.

Minnesota CO Academy cadets exposed to ‘sportfishing scenarios’ as instruction nears its completion

For the past several weeks, through classroom and simulated field scenarios, 13 DNR Enforcement conservation officer cadets have been working to prepare for the job as Minnesota conservation officer.
Each week, the cadets focus on an aspect of outdoor recreation and home in on it. On Thursday, July 24, the cadets got a taste of how to handle sportfishing, both on the open water and on ice through simulated scenarios.

Plenty of antlerless opportunities available for New York deer hunters as licenses go on sale

Sporting licenses go on sale Aug. 4, and hunters can apply for Deer Management Permits, used to take antlerless deer across much of New York.
And for the most part, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation white-tailed deer biologists are hoping hunters will rise to the occasion, not only in applying for antlerless deer permits in some parts of the state, but making efforts to fill them once the hunting seasons arrive.

Mike Schoonveld: Anglers go coast to coast in same day for great fishing on Michigan’s Great Lakes

I was intrigued when I saw a Facebook post highlighting an unplanned, coast to coast escapade made by three men from Hillsdale, Michigan.
Tim Parker, Mitch Lige, and Mark Sigler are all retired, all boat owners and they share a passion for fishing. Sure there are places to fish near Hillsdale, but they are especially passionate about fishing big water, specifically, in Lake Michigan on Michigan’s west coast and on Lake Erie on Michigan’s southeast coast.
