Minnesota duck numbers up during spring survey, but bluewings take dive

Despite a historically-low estimate of blue-winged teal, Minnesota’s total duck abundance (excluding scaup) was 8% above last year’s estimate, according to the results of the 2025 Waterfowl Breeding Population Survey conducted in May by the Minnesota DNR.
“These results were about what we expected,” said Nate Huck, Minnesota DNR migratory gamebird consultant.

Pennsylvania Game Commission lines up 13 straight Sundays to hunt this fall

Taking action in the wake of the new law signed by Gov. Shapiro July 9 that lifts the ban on Sunday hunting, Pennsylvania game commissioners voted to add 10 Sundays to this fall’s hunting seasons at their meeting here July 28.
With the three Sundays that already were scheduled, that equates to 13 consecutive Sundays to pursue game beginning Sept. 14 and extending through the second Sunday in firearms deer season Dec. 7.

Appeals court rules against Minnesota deer farmers

Is it the end of the line for Minnesota deer farmers fighting new laws, directed at their vocation and enacted during the 2023 legislative session?
Following the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision Monday that affirms an early U.S. District Court rejection of a lawsuit – brought by the Minnesota Deer Farmers Association and a host of deer farmers themselves against several state agencies and officials – that conclusion could be drawn. Steve Porter, secretary of the MDFA and owner of Steve Porter’s Trophy Whitetail near Lake Bronson in northern Minnesota, however, says not so fast.

Bob Gwizdz: Is bass fishing really getting better on Michigan’s Lake St. Clair?

Back in the spring, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources put out a story with photos entitled: “The good times are now: Smallmouth bass fishing has never been better in Lake St. Clair.”
The first line of the story: “Now is the best time to be a bass angler on Lake St. Clair in the last 50 years.”
That’s a bold statement. Bass fishing on Lake St. Clair is excellent, sure enough, but it has been for at least 50 years.

Avian flu hits bald eagles in Michigan and Ohio

The bald eagle population has made a significant recovery since 1979 when only four nests remained in Ohio while chemical pollution prevented successful reproduction.
The Ohio Division of Wildlife recently reported that after conducting aerial surveys, observers counted 964 actively nesting pairs in 87 of Ohio’s 88 counties. However, even with a population in the low thousands, they are still vulnerable to catastrophic weather events and diseases that can reverse the gains made by this slow to reproduce species.
