Count of Lake Michigan’s declining lake whitefish in process

Earlier this year, fisheries biologists up north sounded alarms about an ominous trend threatening one of the Great Lakes’ most foundational and key fish species: lake whitefish.
Though not commonly caught by Illinois anglers, lake whitefish are native to Lake Michigan, and therefore Illinois. The species swims in schools and hunts for food near the bottom of the lake, eating plankton, crustaceans, mollusks, and insect larvae.

Are springer spaniels the ultimate ‘rooster’ dog? They have a case

Known for boundless energy, keen noses, and loyalty afield, English springer spaniels rank as one of the most enduring gundog breeds in the United States. Ask Dave Nomsen, the retired vice president of government affairs for Pheasants Forever, about the breed and he has a simple take:
“Just to hunt pheasants? That’s the dog. Springers are the pure pheasant dog.”

Streams of Thought: Some lessons learned from a recent fishing trip to Ontario

Since my head last occupied this box, I’ve been to Ontario and back, to fish the hallowed waters of Lake of the Woods and to share in adventure with 11 other fine folks – most of whom I’ve known since kidhood.
Our fishing party’s size and composition have ebbed and flowed and changed and changed again during the past three decades, but the core remains, albeit with less hair and more aches and pains. In the interest of those who might soon similarly sojourn to a place of solitude and fishyness, I offer lessons I learned, and other reminders that were served earlier this June.

Federal funding cuts threaten popular Dunkirk Buoy program used by New York’s boaters, anglers

Earlier this year, the fishing and research community that utilizes Lake Erie was made aware that funding may be in jeopardy for the Dunkirk Buoy in New York, a valuable public resource.
Proposed federal cuts would impact the Great Lakes Observing System (GLOS), which helps support the operation and provides end-to-end data services that support science, policy, management, and industry all around the Great Lakes region.

Five budget trail camera options for diehard whitetail hunters

Of all the gear advancements over the past quarter-century, arguably none has changed the way we hunt more than trail cameras. They’re firmly entrenched in the modern hunter’s gear arsenal, and for good reason.
There’s no better way to quickly inventory bucks in your hunting area. With proper use, a savvy hunter can use trail cameras to up the odds of encountering a specific buck during shooting hours. Though trail cam technology has improved by leaps and bounds, the options, prices, and features have gotten more complex.
