Reading, Pa. — Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission Executive Director Tim Schaeffer, state Rep. Jacklyn Rusnock, D-Berks, and local officials gathered at Pioneer Grove Park in Muhlenberg Township, Berks County, on May 22, to break ground on a new boat launch along the Schuylkill River.

In 2025, the Fish & Boat Commission awarded a $45,205 Boating Facility Grant to the township for the project, which will accommodate unpowered boats such as canoes and kayaks, as well as small, motorized watercraft including those used by local emergency responders on the Schuylkill River.

“Through our Boating Facilities Grant program, more communities are realizing the benefits of improving their existing access areas or developing new places that local residents and visiting recreational boaters can enjoy.”

The value of this project is even greater, Schaeffer added, because of the benefit to local first responders who have a new place to access the river in case of an emergency.

The total cost of the project is approximately $90,500. Construction is expected to begin later this year and be completed by spring of 2026.
