In January, state wildlife officer Mark Williams, assigned to Franklin County, received a call from a licensed nuisance trapper whose trap had been illegally disturbed. Officer Williams discovered that an individual had removed the trap and released a raccoon before returning and resetting the trap.

Saugeyes stocked into Ohio’s Grand Lake for the first time

The Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife released around 217,000 saugeyes into Grand Lake St. Marys for the first time on May 21. Saugeyes are fast-growing and popular sport fish that are well suited for Ohio’s reservoirs, because they are tolerant of warm and shallow waters, according to the Division of Wildlife.

Algae bloom prediction is mild to moderate on western Lake Erie this year

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Center for Coastal Ocean Science issued its first Western Lake Erie Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) forecast on May 8.
Microcystis is the cyanobacteria that is responsible for the unsightly and potentially toxic HABs on Lake Erie that can cause skin irritation, respiratory distress, and gastrointestinal disturbances when exposed to the organism.
