March ice storm devastated Michigan’s forest resources

The devastating ice storm in late March that wreaked havoc on northern Michigan did multiple millions of dollars of damage to state forest resources, and its effects are likely to be felt for the next half century.
Scott Whitcomb, who runs the Office of Public Lands for the Department of Natural Resources, said officials are constantly calculating the cost of the ice storm that affected more than 900,000 acres – 22% of the state’s forest system. The DNR will face not only significant lost timber revenue, but will also incur dramatic costs for replanting the red pine plantations that were damaged or destroyed.

Glenn Sapir: Bubblegum pink plastic worm has earned its reputation as a bass-catching favorite

When the bass harvest season opens on June 15 in New York, I can predict which lures I will have tied on my line. I will have four spinning outfits ready to go, each with one of my old faithful artificial baits.
Of the possible baits, one is a sure bet. Ready to be cast will be a 5-inch plastic worm rigged wacky style, that is, with the hook point going in and coming out of the worm at about the midway point. The bait brand will be either a Senko or Gajo, the latter manufactured right here in New York.

Steve McComas: Who’s smarter, fish or anglers? Examples might surprise you

It’s an age-old question: Of fish and fishermen, who’s smarter? A recent magazine article stated that salmon have an IQ of 130.
Darn. That’s smarter than me.  Maybe it’s because salmon are full of Omega-3 fatty acids. However, no references were given, nor were test methods provided. After a little more snooping around, it was determined to be a non-scientific source, and I remain skeptical.

Gretchen Steele: Staying safe in southern Illinois’ great outdoors

Memorial Day weekend has come and gone, and with it, the unofficial launch of summer. If you’re like many folks in southern Illinois, the long weekend was a chance to soak up sunshine, fire up the grill, and head into the woods or onto the water.
From the rocky overlooks at Garden of the Gods to the shady paths of Ferne Clyffe and the still waters of Rend Lake, nature put on a show– and visitors showed up in droves.

Is an electric pickup right for the hunter, angler? Here’s what to consider from the ‘Big Three’

Anyone reading online chat rooms regarding the feasibility of using electric pickup trucks for hunting, fishing or trapping might wonder if the day could ever come where an electric rig could replace a good ol’ internal combustion engine breathing and burning a mixture of atmosphere and gasoline (or diesel) for reliable torque in sticky situations.

The day of seriously considering an electric truck may be creeping closer for some sportsmen.

A wet May dampened enthusiasm for fishing, boating in Pennsylvania

May was super soggy in most of Pennsylvania, dampening excitement for fishing and boating at a time of year when they should have been ramping up.
“This is our 40th year in business, and we’ve had other bad springs with rain and mud, but this spring was horrible,” said Mike Milvet of Cross Creek’s Original Bait and Tackle at Cross Creek Lake, in Washington County.
