Lesa Kardash named Wisconsin Wildlife Federation’s Conservationist of Year

The DNR’s Lesa Kardash was chosen as the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation (WWF) Conservationist of the Year, with the award bestowed on Kardash at the group’s annual award banquet.
When it comes to protecting Wisconsin’s wildlife, the name of Lesa Kardash carries a lot of weight, said Cody Kamrowski, WWF executive director. A 25-year DNR veteran and a senior wildlife biologist, Kardash has long been at the forefront of conservation. But it is her tireless work safeguarding one of the state’s most iconic and threatened grassland species, the greater prairie chicken, that earned her WWF’s highest honor.

Dean Bortz: Walleyes for Tomorrow crews in Wisconsin doing yeoman’s work

There’s a good chance most fishermen don’t know that volunteer members of Walleyes for Tomorrow (WfT) work in their behalf every spring and have been doing so for – what? – 12, 15 years now in Wisconsin?
That spring “work” comes in the form of “walleye wagons,” portable fish hatcheries WfT members place on shores of lakes where local chapters have received permits from the DNR to net walleyes, collect eggs and milt, and hatch fry that go directly into the donor lakes.

Wisconsin’s Caleb Wistad turns a fishing dream into reality

For 20 years Caleb Wistad, of Spooner, worked as a plumber.
Then he quit to go fishing.
“It was getting to the point I had to prioritize,” said Wistad, who is now living the kind of outdoorsman’s life that many dream of. “Plumbing is a great trade, and I was good at it. I’ll never be sorry I got into that. But I quit and I’m full-time into fishing now.”
