Your guide to understanding New York’s laws for personal flotation devices

Among New York’s PFD laws are those that require a PFD for every person on board a vessel, and those operating any vessel smaller than 21-feet in length are required to wear a PFD from Nov. 1 to April 30. (Photos by Jerry Bush)

Personal flotation devices (PFDs) are the most essential safety accessory for any water vessel, providing you have the correct ones for the situation, use them properly, and care for them.
Off-shore life jackets (Type I PFDs) are considered effective for all waters. These vests provide the most buoyancy and are designed to turn even unconscious wearers face up.
