Vote on Michigan coyote season tabled as lawsuit plays out

The Michigan Natural Resources Commission on April 10 voted to table a proposal to reverse last year’s decision to close the coyote hunting season between April 15 and July 15.
The NRC decision in March 2024 reverted the coyote season structure to how it was before the state moved to year-round hunting eight years ago, prompting lawsuits from Michigan United Conservation Clubs and the Michigan Trappers and Predator Callers Association that were consolidated in Ingham County Circuit Court.

Here’s how to respond to those hung-up toms

There are few things more frustrating than a longbeard that just won’t commit. Sometimes you can see him strutting away, just out of range. He’ll pace back and forth, covering ground with tiny steps while gobbling his head off, but just won’t break your way.
Other times, you can only hear him, which is almost more frustrating. Sometimes there isn’t anything you can do. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try a few things to see if you can persuade him to stop showing off, and to start walking in.

Your guide to understanding New York’s laws for personal flotation devices

Personal flotation devices (PFDs) are the most essential safety accessory for any water vessel, providing you have the correct ones for the situation, use them properly, and care for them.
Off-shore life jackets (Type I PFDs) are considered effective for all waters. These vests provide the most buoyancy and are designed to turn even unconscious wearers face up.

Nature Smart: Taking a close look at rebounding sea otters

For whatever reason, people love certain wild animal species. They have a universal appeal, resulting in admiration across the masses. For example, many folks are obsessed with owls. Any kind of owl. Big ones, small ones, it really doesn’t matter.
The same can be said for a group of mammals, the otters. For whatever reason, everyone seems to love otters. This was on full display last week while I was leading a photographic tour of bald eagles and sea otters in Alaska.
