Ohio’s Outdoor Trailblazers: Eric Kraus restores Standing Rush Marsh on Sandusky Bay

Eric Kraus is the proprietor of Standing Rush Marsh on Sandusky Bay, having bought the nearly 600-acre parcel 10 years ago with the goal of restoring it to its natural wonder.
So far, so good.
“Standing Rush was the culmination of a lot of different stars aligning,” said Kraus.

Michigan DNR wildlife chief describes the need for a new funding model

One of Michigan’s biggest news stories of 2014 was the increase of the state’s minimum hourly wage from $7.40 to $8.15 – the first of several increases that have culminated in the current minimum wage of $12.48, with additional increases scheduled over the next four years.
Other changes deployed since then to help workers keep up with ever-increasing costs of goods and services include multiple Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA) for all Michigan state employees – including those employed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Division. One thing that hasn’t changed since 2014 is the cost of a hunting license.

Recent donations add more of Bob Hines’ wildlife artwork to Hayes library in Ohio

When Bob Hines was growing up in the 1910s and 1920s in Fremont, Ohio, he was always tending to animals. His back yard was a wildlife menagerie, and at any given time he’d have turtles, skunks, quail, ducks, fish, crows, and more in his care.
He was naturally inclined to love the outdoors and all things wild, and he spent his free time camping along the Sandusky River, fishing and hunting.

Walleye total allowable catch limits drop a bit from 2024 levels on Lake Erie

On March 20, Lake Erie’s fisheries agencies met to set the 2025 walleye and yellow perch total allowable catch (TAC) harvest limits.
The total allowable catch (TAC) for walleyes in the western and central portions of Lake Erie for 2025 was set at 11,373,000 fish, 11% less than the 12,858,000 fish allowed in 2024. A combined 8,522,037 walleyes were harvested in 2024 within Ohio, Ontario, and Michigan waters of Lake Erie, according to data from the lake’s fishery managers.
