Understand these signs to better gauge when and where to be in the turkey woods

Hunters might argue that any day and all days are good days for getting outside and turkey hunting. I get that if a person is limited to one tag and seven days of hunting, but I figure there will be a few fabulous days and an equal number of stinky days with the vast majority of our opportunity falling in between.
There are clues to indicate which way the scale of success could tip.

Steve Sarley: Illinois’ Chris Taurisano hanging up well-worn fishing guide cap

I see a lot of things on social media that surprise me but nothing as shocking as what I saw on my Facebook feed on a recent day. It blew me away. It was from the page of my good friend, Chris Taurisano, the best fishing guide in northern Illinois. He is retiring.

Save Ohio Parks seeks a pause on state park drilling

Save Ohio Parks, an organization that opposes fracking for oil and gas in state parks and wildlife areas, is leading a group of 30 environmental organizations in asking Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine to suspend that activity on public lands for the time being.
As of mid-March, 1,049 letters went to the governor’s office in support of suspension.

Dan Ladd: March ice-fishing trip to New York’s Fulton County better late than never

Here it is early April, and I’m looking back a month to early March, which found me doing something I typically do around the Christmas holiday: getting my ice fishing gear in order.
Actually, I had rounded up everything right after deer season ended and once New York’s holiday-week hunt was over I began to get excited in late January as my favorite lakes began to button up. But things went awry in February thanks to social events and recurring Sunday snowstorms that kept this weekend warrior angler off the ice.

Streams of Thought: Time for a return to turkey hunting

It’s been a few years since I’ve hunted turkeys, mostly attributable to an intense fear of Lyme disease and early wake-up calls. I suppose those are terrible or valid excuses, depending on your perspective.
But the turkey population in the neighborhood seems it could be trimmed by a tom or two, and the gobbles I hear most mornings as the pup does her thing along the edge of the woods have convinced me to make a triumphant (or something like that) return to the game, ticks and alarm clock be damned.

Commentary: Do your part to help build the future of outdoor sports

Something I often hear from folks involved in hunting, fishing and the shooting sports is “We need to get more youngsters involved.”
I’m sure many readers have this same thought. I’m fortunate that my job working with 4-H Youth Development affords me the opportunity to engage youth in outdoor education and shooting sports. Through my years of working in this field I have come to learn that teaching youth shooting sports is about so much more than shooting.
