Pro Fishing Tip of the Week: Inspect your gear before hitting the water

Before hitting the waters, it’s crucial to ensure that all fishing gear is in perfect condition. This includes inspecting rods, reels, lines, and tackle boxes. Check for any signs of wear and tear, and make sure reels are well-lubricated. Properly maintained equipment can make a significant difference in the overall fishing experience.

Ice-out ahead of schedule in Minnesota, but not a repeat of 2024

If you think declaration of “ice-out” for Minnesota lakes is precision science, you’d be incorrect. And again this year, as the phenomenon of ice melt advances south to north across Minnesota, determining what constitutes ice-out continues to be a mix of general guidelines and quirky traditions, depending on the lake that’s under review.

Michigan fisheries chief pushes case for increasing license fees

Current Fisheries Division Chief Randy Claramunt hadn’t yet reached 10 years of age in January of 1979 when the Michigan Department of Natural Resources published an internal report titled “Hunting and Fishing Licenses: Why the System Needs to be Changed.” The report described a looming fiscal crisis and the threat it posed to hunting and fishing programs due to budgets that were underfunded by millions of dollars.

Court dismisses challenges over tribal fishing rights in Michigan’s Great Lakes

The battle over tribal fishing rights resulting from the Treaty of 1836 appears to finally be over as the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati has dismissed a pair of lawsuits challenging the decree.
The rules governing tribal fishing on the Great Lakes have been in effect since 2023 despite lawsuits filed by the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and the Coalition to Protect Michigan Resources, a group of sport fishing organizations, which were not happy with the agreement worked out by the state of Michigan, the U.S. government, and the remaining tribes.

Ohio State Trappers Association’s final fur auction draws good turnout

There was a good turnout for the Ohio State Trappers Association’s second and final fur auction of the season in Kidron on March 8. Some 60 trappers and hunters, some with multiple lots, sold 5,134 furbearer pelts to 13 buyers.
OSTA fur auction coordinator Shawn Bentley wanted to express his appreciation to the volunteers who helped make this event run smoothly and give Ohio’s fur harvesters a place to sell their hard-earned catches.
