Revisit the Old-West in this Pennsylvania cowboy action shoot

The North Mountain Sportsman’s Association in Muncy Valley, Pa., offers a few different shooting disciplines, one of which is Cowboy Action Shooting.
This sport was founded in 1987 in California by a few men who thought it might be fun to “cowboy up” and use single-action pistols, a lever- action rifle, and a double-barreled shotgun in place of the firearms they had been using for International Practical Shooting Confederation matches.

Steve Piatt: The life of a Labrador centers around a routine

Years of experience in Labrador retriever ownership told me to remove my glasses before exiting the truck and walking in the door after a six-day stint at the Great American Outdoor Show in Harrisburg, Pa.
I was about to get mauled, this time by a joyous Molly and Riley, who had been out of sorts during my absence, as they are also when Paula is on the road for any extended period, which in a Lab’s world is anything more than three hours, it seems.

Nature Smart: Get to know the long-tailed weasel — a tiny but true predator

Uncommon critters fascinate me, which reminds me of some encounters I had with a cool animal on my recent photo tours in Yellowstone National Park this winter.
The long-tailed weasel (Neogale frenata) is one of those incredibly interesting critters that you hear about but rarely see. Also known as the masked ermine or just “ermine,” the species is sometimes mistakenly called stoat.

Commentary: Joint replacements can restore an outdoor life

The Pennsylvania wilderness can be unforgiving on an aging body. As time goes on, reaching your trusted “honey-hole” stand becomes a challenge, and sometimes it’s hard to tell whether the crunch of dry leaves underfoot is from your boots or the creak of an arthritic hip or knee.
This is a familiar story shared by many of my patients who love the outdoors, many of whom have spent years struggling with pain and limited mobility, unaware of the options available to help restore the comfort and movement they once took for granted.
