Western Minnesota offers enough spring snow geese for the DIY hunter

Not every waterfowler has the good fortune to live along a snow goose migration route. But every spring, the sounds of first pairs of Canada geese are heard in our area of western Minnesota. That’s a signal to those of us who are fortunate.
It’s time to prepare for what many of we old-timers consider a minor miracle: the opportunity to hunt light geese (snows, blues, Ross’s) during spring – once considered an impossibility to those of us “of a certain age.” That makes us thankful.

Oak Duke: There’s something special about fooling trout on your own flies

The yellow school bus dropped off three little kids in front of their dirt road leading to the old unpainted farmhouse up the hill. The kids, with metal lunch boxes, clutching papers, dreaded the end, the terrifying sprint… the last 50 yards or so to the house, past the barn where the mean old rooster ruled.
He attacked everyone, but especially little screaming children, pecking, beating with wings, and jumping, trying to lance the kid’s legs with sharp spurs, squawking until the farmhouse door was slammed shut. I was helping a buddy build a cabin, and parked on the edge of the shared driveway, learning quickly that everyone feared the rooster.

Iowa DNR auction will be held live online on April 19

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) annual spring auction will be held online at 10 a.m., April 19, 2025.
The Iowa DNR has been tasked for decades to represent the State of Iowa to manage the annual sale of confiscated long guns (rifles, shotguns, bows) to the public who have the state or federally required permits to acquire. Handguns, AR platform rifles and select miscellaneous guns are not included in this sale.

Good poult production in recent years expected to set up a good turkey season in Ohio

A bit more than 15,000 turkey hunters will likely be successful in Ohio this spring, according to the ODNR Division of Wildlife.
The season kicks off in the South Zone, which encompasses most of the state, on April 19 and it runs through May 18. The small Northeast Zone opens on May 18 and the season in that zone runs through June 1.
“We’ve had several good poult years in a row,” said Mark Wiley, a biologist with the Division of Wildlife.

Pennsylvania’s Carbon County land deal brings hunting land access concerns

A high ranking official with the Pennsylvania Game Commission promised that hunters won’t lose out in a potential land deal with another state agency.

According to a Feb. 5 newsletter from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Gov. Josh Shapiro’s budget proposal includes $5 million to expand state parks. Among the expansion, according to the newsletter, is the “transfer” of 391 acres in Carbon County from the Game Commission to DCNR’s Lehigh Gorge State Park.

Christine Thomas: Plenty to see, and photograph, at Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge

“What do you hope to see at Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge this week?” my daughter, Shannon, asked. “I am hoping to see wood storks.”
“Spoonbills,” I chimed in.
“Gators,” my husband, Stan said, predictably. Never mind that we had only ever seen one alligator in our many years of going.
