For a little over a decade, researchers have been monitoring the impact of bison on plant and animal communities at The Nature Conservancy’s Nachusa Grasslands, which is located in Franklin Grove, Ill., about 35 miles south of Rockford.
A separate study looked at the effects of both bison grazing and prescribed fire management on grassland birds. The efforts have identified some interesting developments, including evidence that bison are playing a role in altering prairie habitat for species of concern, such as the Henslow’s sparrow.
