Ralph Loos: Why aren’t deer abundant in some areas of Illinois? Predators come in all colors

Nobody knows that more than the guy sitting right here typing his thoughts out on this page. After reporting any kind of positive news about the state’s deer, I can count on my phone ringing and my email popping with opinions that run counter to news I shared.

NWTF habitat program ongoing at New York’s Finger Lakes National Forest

New York’s Finger Lakes National Forest is home to the first acres managed under the National Wild Turkey Federation’s Forests and Flocks Initiative, which was officially launched last year in August. While the project started with a dozen or so acres of improved habitat on the scoreboard, the work continues to expand.

How do longbeards and geometry go together? The answer can help you bag gobblers

A long time ago when I was a clueless sophomore and maintaining passing grades in geometry was a daily struggle, I felt insulted when the teacher used the term “obtuse” while addressing our class.
Eventually I understood she was likely trying to explain a type of angle rather than commenting on our intelligence. Today I believe that had she helped us connect geometry to something fun – say, like turkey hunting – I would have grasped the principles much more quickly. Last spring, when I killed a big tom at the intersection of a woods road and the field I was hunting, I realized I actually use geometry daily while hunting turkeys.

Illinois sees a significant boost in total deer harvest

A significant increase in late-winter success combined with slight bumps in the take by archery and firearms hunters led to an overall spike in the Illinois 2024-25 deer harvest.
DNR reported that hunters took a total of 170,758 deer, more than 10,000 more than the 2023-24 harvest of 160,313. The deer season ended Jan. 19, but DNR was quick to turn around final kill numbers, along with the sex ratio of deer taken.

State Roundup: Legendary Wisconsin wildlife biologist authors another book

Neil F. Payne ranks as one of Wisconsin’s legendary wildlife biologists. My knowledge of Payne began simply through his emails to me every spring and fall asking for an address change from his summer residence to his wintering groups.
Over the years we started talking and it was then I discovered the colorful character who walks this Earth as Neil F. Payne. I’ve never actually met Payne, but I’ve come to enjoy our email exchanges and phone calls. I’m happy to say Payne has written another book, this one entitled Wildlifer: Wisconsin Origin to Climate Change.
