Wings Over Wisconsin has track wheelchairs available

Wings Over Wisconsin (WOW) wants more people to know about the all-terrain wheelchairs available for use from several local WOW chapters. The program was started 20 years ago by the Fond du Lac chapter.
“We have four Action Trackchairs, which are wheelchairs on tracks,” said WOW Executive Director Burt Bushke from the state WOW office in Mayville. “We have two that are housed here in Mayville. We have one in our Denmark chapter and one in our La Crosse chapter.”
There is no cost for disabled folks to access the chairs.

Illinois DNR’s fall lake trout sampling rebounds in Lake Michigan

An unusually poor collection of lake trout during the Illinois DNR’s sampling of Lake Michigan sites last May was followed by more promising results in October and November.
Nettings of the fish each year help biologists monitor progress in an ongoing effort to rebuild the lake’s population.

New York to get $32 million in federal conservation funds

New York is poised to receive nearly $32 million in federal conservation funds for the Fiscal Year 2025. The funding is among $1.3 billion in apportionments nationwide though the Wildlife Restoration Act, better known as Pittman-Robertson and Dingell-Johnson funds thanks to  excise taxes paid by sportsmen.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently announced the apportionments to support states, commonwealths and territories in its efforts to fund conservation and connect people with nature.

Patrick Durkin: CWD is sinking deer herds in disease areas

If you’re seeing too few deer in southwestern Wisconsin for your hunting or viewing pleasure, it’s time to accept the obvious reason: The culprit is chronic wasting disease (CWD), the always fatal prion disease that now kills more female deer in highly contaminated areas than hunters kill with bullets and arrows. Roughly speaking, that’s much of Iowa, Sauk, Richland, and western Dane counties.
The DNR confirmed that fact for the first time Jan. 22 when releasing the latest findings of its long-running $5 million study into how CWD affects deer populations.
