Kiser Lake in Champaign County, Ohio, is super productive, best for panfishing

With all due respect, many of our inland lakes in Ohio are rather featureless upground reservoirs that were originally built for water supply purposes, not for fishing.
In other words, angling opportunities are simply a bonus in most of these places. Kiser Lake in west-central Ohio was built for industrious purposes in the 1840s to provide power for a gristmill and a sawmill that operated in the area.

Tom Pink: Huge Michigan snowfalls meant digging out the ice shack

A friend and I dug my ice shack out of the more than 60 inches of snow that had accumulated in our Sault Ste. Marie neighborhood over the past few weeks in Michigan. We used a snowblower to make a path and a roof rake to get the snow off the top.
In the several years that I’ve owned this shack, this is the third time we’ve had to unearth it to use it. In fact, when I first acquired it, it took us two days and two borrowed snowmobiles to get it out from where it had been stored in the woods.

On Wyoming County ice in Pennsylvania, try Oxbow, Stevens lakes

Sometimes, when I’m picking a place or places to ice fish, I prefer two lakes in relatively proximity rather than one giant impoundment.
In this way, if the fish aren’t responding to jigging sticks or tip-ups at one lake, I can pick up my gear and in a reasonably short time go to the other water – where hopefully the fish are cooperating. This strategy is important if I’m far from home. A good example of this approach is two Wyoming County lakes I enjoy ice fishing – Oxbow and Stevens – which are a 20-minute rural ride apart.

Star Watch: Top times to see Mars in 2025

But don’t look for Mars on the night of Jan. 13 when it will be “occulted” or covered up by the full moon. These lunar occultations occur when the moon passes in front of a star or planet during its orbital motion around the Earth, obstructing that object from our view.
