Nature Smart: The javelina is quite the cool critter

Though they bear a familial resemblance to Old World domestic pigs, the javelina of North America’s desert southwest region belongs to a separate New World family of mammals. Often when I’m leading a photo tour, we’re seeking a specific bird or mammal or maybe a couple of species. For example, recently I was leading a tour to central New Mexico, and we were searching for large flocks of snow geese and sandhill cranes.
Both species winter in the region in large numbers. But for me, it isn’t always the iconic or most abundant species that catches my attention. No, for me it’s usually a species that isn’t common or well known.
