Conversations leading up to the Michigan firearms deer season between my hunting buddies and I often focus on how hot the rut is, what stand each of us is going to sit in on Nov. 15, and if we’ll have good tracking snow for opening day. In past years, the possibility of snow was about a 50/50 bet but in recent years those odds have slipped precipitously. Several years ago, O’Shaughnessy Reservoir in Delaware County in central Ohio showed the best catch rate for largemouth bass of any lake fished on Ohio’s bass tournament circuit.
A bass 12 inches or larger is considered a keeper because that’s the minimum legal size fish in O’Shaugnessy. There’s plenty of bass here, most in the 2 1 ⁄2 to 3-pound range that will run anywhere from 14 to 20 inches.

The calm, cold weather, and a colorful morning sky provided a great backdrop for the opening of Pennsylvania’s general elk season Nov. 4. Sixty-eight fortunate hunters drew permits for this limited hunt, however, the opening day rewarded only 11 hunters with elk.
The elk check station was held on the grounds of the Elk Country Visitor Center in Benezette. Hunters are required to check their elk and supply samples for study and testing.
