“You won’t save much money,” advised an old friend, who long ago convinced me to hand load ammunition for fun and self-gratification. His comment regarding the activity’s economic benefit was correct then because factory ammunition was inexpensive and plentiful in the late 1980s.
Recently, another friend asked me to keep my eyes open for specific ammunition he struggled to find on retailer’s shelves. As I perused the inventories of several shops, I learned that many cartridges were in short supply, and the prices were higher than I expected. The discovery led me to investigate if hand-loading ammunition today provides significant cost savings. My suspicions proved correct, but what had changed?

Managing Editor Rob Drieslein kicks off the show with Minnesota
Most hunters dream of the whitetail rut, and for good reason. It’s the great leveling agent where anyone and everyone has a chance at a giant. There’s also the promise of all-day activity to get you out there.
It’s also true that because everyone loves the rut, most hunters devote their time to it. Bowhunters do, of course, but that’s also when the firearms season opens here in Minnesota. The crowding can mitigate some of the benefits of the rut, but that’s one of the reasons to love the back half of October.

Below I recount a personal experience from well over a decade ago in which my forensics laboratory helped catch wildlife violators from a distance.

We’re a long way from the phrase’s origins, cradled as we are by fresh, not saltwater seas, and yet there’s something that stirs some anglers’ souls by the notion that “surf’s up!”
Sure, on the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, the Gulf of Mexico, and even some Great Lakes shorelines, “Surf’s up!” signals a scramble for boards and, often, wetsuits. That’s fun. I found out when I tried it a half-century ago. But what I truly love about surf is the great fishing that can accompany a series of breaking waves.
