Michigan’s Manitou Island access difficult for deer hunters this fall

A temporary dock built by the National Park Service but described as unfit for ferry boat docking is causing havoc for Michigan hunters hoping to harvest deer on North Manitou Island this fall.
While the issue of safety when tied to the 100-foot dock extension remains unsettled – a ferry boat captain with 31 years of experience doesn’t want to put passengers in jeopardy while NPS engineers in Denver are sticking by their design – would-be hunters who bought permits for the island’s coveted eight-day wilderness hunt scrambled to find alternative transpiration.

Michigan’s Cornwall Flooding drawn down to meet safety standards

The Cornwall Creek Flooding, located within the Pigeon River Country State Forest, is a popular northern Michigan location for fishing, paddling and other recreation.
Over the past couple of months, the water level of the 161-acre lake was lowered by several feet to address safety concerns with the Cornwall Dam, which creates the impoundment, and to prepare for the planned renovation of the dam.

Outdoor Observations: Will southern Michigan hunters heed the call to shoot more antlerless deer this season?

There is a saying that goes, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” I credit the DNR for heeding that call when it comes to increasing the antlerless harvest in southern Michigan.
Last year, DNR Deer Specialist Chad Stewart sent out an open letter to all hunters, which ran in this publication (Oct. 23, 2023) and others. He explained that we weren’t taking enough does to control the size of the herd and encouraged hunters to make a concerted effort to harvest more antlerless deer, particularly in the southern part of the Lower Peninsula.

For saugeyes and muskies, Piedmont Lake hard to beat for Ohio anglers

Within the upper echelon of Ohio’s finest saugeye and smallmouth bass lakes is 2,310-acre Piedmont Lake, according to the DNR Division of Wildlife.
Piedmont lies within Ohio’s Wildlife District 4 and spreads across Guernsey, Belmont, and Harrison counties. The lake is stocked every May with 100 saugeye fingerlings per surface acre. When the fingerlings are introduced to their new home, they are between one and three inches long.
