Ohio’s youth seasons ‘good opportunity’ for young hunters

Last deer season was a banner campaign for young Ohio whitetail hunters.
“Last (youth deer season) was an exceptional year,” said Mike Tonkovich, the ODNR Division of Wildlife’s deer project administrator. “We were up over 31% for just over 10,000 deer killed during that two-day youth season. That was quite the jump because it was 31% higher than the three-year average.”

Ohio Insider: Good news on the turkey front

Ohio’s turkey biologists say the state is finally stringing together some good years of wild turkey hatches.
According to information released in early October by the ODNR Division of Wildlife, the state’s wild turkey poult index was slightly above the 10-year average at 2.9 poults per hen in 2024.
“We’ve had four good years in a row, so it’s bringing the average (poults per hen) number up,” said Mark Wiley, the Division of Wildlife’s lead turkey biologist. “So, this is a positive thing after those rough years of 2017, 2018, and 2019.”

Penn State University cuts greenhouse gas emissions in half

Since 2005, Penn State has worked steadily toward lowering its university-wide greenhouse gas emissions. Along the way, the university set and met various goals – including a 17.5% reduction by 2012 and a 35% reduction by 2020 – and recently exceeded a 50% reduction, marking a major milestone.

Minnesota’s firearms deer forecast: What will a mild winter, wet spring, dry fall mean for hunters?

The relatively warm and mostly snow-free winter was a welcome reprieve for whitetails, especially in parts of far northern Minnesota that experienced severe winters in each of the prior two years. Most deer should have come into spring 2024 in good condition.

Ron Schara: Black Hills turkey license cap another example of hunters fighting with hunters, and it won’t end well

The eight-member citizens commission for the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department voted recently to continue pitting hunters against hunters. It’s nothing new.
In this case, members of the South Dakota Wildlife Federation packed a commission meeting and demanded a reduction in how many nonresidents are allowed to hunt during the spring turkey season in the Black Hills.

Kirk Schnitker: Is the Minnesota DNR breaking rules by using neonics?

Neonicotinoids, often called neonics, are a type of pesticide known for their negative effects on non-target insects. They’re used to kill farm crop pests such as aphids, but they also kill bees, butterflies, and many other desirable, non-target insects.
Neonics are bad for the environment, but they’re used extensively in Minnesota where they’re largely unregulated. The Minnesota Legislature in 2023 did take some steps in regulating their use. It passed a law that legislated that, among other things, the DNR cannot use or permit neonics use on any DNR-managed public lands.
