Notes off a soiled cuff: Time ticking to lift Sunday hunting ban in Pennsylvania this session

Just before this issue went to press, the House Game and Fisheries Committee voted to move a bill that would lift the prohibition on Sunday hunting in Pennsylvania to the House floor for a vote. During a lengthy meeting, committee members voted to pass Senate Bill 67, which gives the Game Commission the authority to institute Sunday hunting on any dates it wants to.

Bill Hilts, Jr.: New York’s St. Mary’s School of the Deaf adapts NASP process to bring archery to students

September was Deaf Awareness Month across the country. It’s only fitting to pay special recognition to an archery program at St. Mary’s School of the Deaf in Buffalo, N.Y.
It is a perfect example of how barriers can be broken down and thinking outside of the box can make things happen. Necessity may be the mother of invention, but adaption and creativity may be the father of desire to help others.

Here’s how to approach your new pup’s first season as a duck retriever

There’s an interesting culture around duck hunting. It’s one of those pursuits in which there aren’t a lot of passive, weekend-warrior types. I guess in that way, it’s kind of like MMA fighting, or rock climbing. If you’re going to do it, you might as well go deep.

Tom Venesky: Anti-fur legislation a threat to us all

Trappers are used to taking the brunt of animal welfare legislation that is introduced in state legislatures every so often.

Most of the time, these misguided measures go after trapping and the ultimate goal is to ban it. The anti-fur, animal rights groups don’t like trappers, and they’re the sole target of just about every ludicrous anti-trapping bill that surfaces. Sometimes, however, trappers aren’t the only victims of legislation derived anti-trapping groups.

Commentary: All of Pennsylvania’s invasive species are not created equal

At what point should an invasive species be accepted or even celebrated as a part of our environment? Recent articles from this publication have my head spinning from the careless actions of specific governing organizations.
I paraphrase: “New regulations require boaters to clean their watercraft before leaving or entering a fishery to slow the spread of invasives.” Flip the page … “The U.S. Forest Service releases beetles native to Japan to help control hemlock woolly adelgid, also from Japan.” Hmmm. Interesting tactic.
