Stocked walleyes enhance Upper Herring’s fishery in Michigan’s Benzie County

Upper Herring Lake is a 540-acre, relatively oval lake located about five miles south of Frankfort, in Benzie County. It offers good fishing for a variety of species.
“Upper Herring is a shallow, weedy lake, but it has good bass and walleye populations, and everything in between,” says David Rose, of Wildfishing Guide Service.

Michigan Mixed Bag: Deadline extended to comment on state forest management plan

Recognizing that many people would welcome more time to review the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ new, draft 10-year State Forest Management Plan, the DNR has extended the original early October deadline to Dec. 31.
The plan guides management of Michigan’s nearly 4 million acres of state forest, spread across the northern Lower and Upper peninsulas.

Firearms no longer allowed at Michigan’s Windsor Township State Game Area

Hunters will no longer be able to use firearms at the Windsor Township State Game Area in Eaton County, Mich.
The 207-acre area is owned by the Department of Technology, Management and Budget but has been operated as a state game area by DNR under a memorandum of understanding since 2006. The game area is in a relatively urban setting and has been shrinking as DTMB has developed other uses for it.

Since voting 4-3 at its July meeting to change the bag limit to antlerless-only for those hunts beginning in 2025, the commission has received considerable push-back from both disabled hunters and those supporting the youth hunt.
