Pennsylvania’s Hawk Mountain Sanctuary tagging vultures for study

If you spot a vulture in Pennsylvania with what looks like a cattle ear tag affixed to each wing, there’s a good explanation for the peculiar sight.
Since 2003, biologists at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Kempton, Pa., have been studying the movements of turkey and black vultures within the state and abroad. In order to track the birds, colored wing tags have been attached to more than 100 turkey and another 100-plus black vultures in Pennsylvania.

Habitat restoration projects bring back wild trout to Pennsylvania’s Tubmill Creek

The Tubmill Trout Club Unlimited recently completed yet another project in its continuing efforts to restore fish habitat on Tubmill Creek and its tributaries.
This year’s habitat project improved 2,100 feet of the club’s namesake stream as it flows through the John Goodish property. Goodish raises hundreds of beef cattle, and over the years the cattle have widened the stream channel – warming the stream during the summer and adding a lot of sediment.

Ohio’s CWD management to see some change this year

During the 2024-25 deer hunting season, hunters will see some changes in how the Ohio Division of Wildlife (DOW) proceeds with chronic wasting disease (CWD) management in the wild deer herd.
For starters, vocal opposition by some landowners and sportsmen have led to a decision to cease targeted removal efforts in 2024-25 in favor of allowing hunters and landowners in the Deer Surveillance Area (DSA) of Hardin, Marion, and Wyandot counties enhanced opportunities to manage the deer population in their community.
