Hunting from ladder stands can be more effective with the right plan

If you drive through whitetail territory, which is pretty much everywhere, you can’t help but notice the proliferation of box blinds.
What was once mostly a Texas thing has spread throughout the Midwest and East, and it’s here to stay. It’s also not an option for everyone. While cheaper, DIY-type box blinds won’t break the bank, the upper end of the pre-fab models can carry a steep price tag, and they can require some heavy-ish machinery to set them up.
Fortunately for most hunters, there are other options for season-long setups, the best being the ladder stand.

Winning lottery makes for great fishing experience on Ohio’s Cold Creek

My grandson, Grady, won the lottery this summer.
He’s only 5 years old, so it wasn’t the one that pays you millions of dollars. It was the lottery that gave him and two of his best buddies, along with his family, the opportunity to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime fishing experience.

Wisconsin DNR trying to learn more about ‘hairless bears’

Retired Wisconsin DNR game warden Dave Sabrowsky has a reputation of knowing what he’s doing when it comes to baiting bears. It’s more than just throwing a few doughnuts in a hole in the ground every few days.
As they say, a successful hunt relies on location, location, location, but there’s more to it than that. Stand placement, preferred bait – if it’s working, don’t change it in the days before the hunt – and the timing of putting that bait out are all factors.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Story piques curiosity about disappearance of B-25 bomber in Pennsylvania’s Monongahela River

The lede of our story about dredging up tons of junk from Pittsburgh’s rivers made me curious. If you want to know more, read the Heinz History Center’s blog, “The Mystery of Pittsburgh’s ‘Ghost Bomber.’”

It tells the story of a B-25 bomber in 1956 gliding low over what is now Homestead Grays Bridge and making a wheels-up splash landing in the Monongahela River near the Glenwood Bridge in Hays.

Dean Bortz: Wildlife biologists offer fall deer forecast for Wisconsin

Each year Wisconsin DNR wildlife biologists in charge of the agency’s four deer hunting districts – the north, northeast, west-central and southern – take a look ahead and try to offer deer hunters some idea of what they might expect to see in the field during the archery, rifle, and muzzleloader seasons.
This year, Derek Johnson handled that task for northern Wisconsin hunters, while Bryan Woodbury did the same in the northeastern counties and Mark Rasmussen surveyed the west-central area of the state. Eric Canania took a look across the southern counties. Let’s check in with Johnson first.
