Turtle Creek restoration in Pennsylvania is a poster child for cooperation

Great things are happening in the Turtle Creek watershed.
A limestone-influenced wild brown trout stream, Turtle Creek flows through wooded and mixed agricultural lands in southeastern Union County, Pa., before it joins the Susquehanna River south of Lewisburg. Turtle Creek and many of its tributaries had steep eroding banks with too-wide channels, and the streams were choked with sediment. Almost all of the streams in the watershed were listed as impaired by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

Ohio DNR marks 75-year anniversary at the state fair

The Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife hosted sportsmen at the Ohio State Fair to celebrate the 75th birthday of the agency and to catch up with friends, talk about fishing, hunting, trapping, and conservation.
ODNR Director Mary Mertz was in attendance, along with chiefs of several other divisions, plus Ohio Department of Agriculture Director Brian Baldridge. Much of the conversation consisted of current fishing trips along with anticipation of the fall hunting and trapping seasons.

Hot, dry conditions are hard on trout in streams

Trout, like anglers, struggle in extreme heat, but have far fewer options for finding relief.
Although the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission says it hasn’t received reports of distressed fish so far this summer, anglers should think twice about targeting trout when water temperatures are high and flows are low.
“Before making that first cast, anglers should consider the added stress placed on a trout when captured by hook and line,” said fisheries management chief Dave Nihart in late July.
