Waterways officers from Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission seek higher pay

Police forces and conservation departments across the United States are experiencing a recruitment and retention problem. According to four presenters at the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission’s summer meeting, no department is in worse shape than the agency’s.
Numbers demonstrate the seriousness of the issue. A few members of the public usually take advantage of the public comment period at the beginning of each commission meeting. The July 22 meeting was unique because four of those presenters worked for the agency.

Al Lindner: With water levels back, late-summer fishing has been a bassin’ bonanza

For many anglers, the month of August is one of those dreadful periods. Typical days often involve a combination of heat and humidity. The old “dog days of summer” thing can certainly feel like the real deal for many species, as water temperatures reach their peak.
Largemouth bass fishing, however, can be downright amazing. In fact, from now and through the fall is without a doubt my favorite timeframe for bass.

Ron Schara: I used to be a good walleye angler. Am I still?

A common creed of a fishing writer, such as myself, is to always tell the truth – the whole truth or enough of the truth to make a fishing story believable.
So, the following is my fishing story from recent times. This confession is absolutely the truth, although some of you will find it hard to believe.  Or maybe not.

Wardens at Work: One thing leads to another in Wisconsin’s Sawyer County deer poaching case

Wisconsin’s 2022 deer seasons had closed when Aaron Koshatka received a call that a deer had allegedly been shot with a rifle on the last day of the archery season, Jan. 9, 2023. At the time, Koshatka was a Sawyer County DNR game warden. He now works in Polk County.
“The party did a great job in providing information. Also, there was fresh snow, making tracks and blood clear. The temperatures were below freezing, helping to better pinpoint events, too,” Koshatka said.

New York Reader Stories: Three toms for a nonagenarian in three days

Anticipation for the 2024 New York spring turkey season was not exactly at a fever pitch. A general lack of gobbling and sightings led to this determination.
One person who was excited for the season was my father, Richard Schilling. At 90 years young, he has been chasing New York and Pennsylvania gobblers since the start of their respective spring seasons in the late 1960s. To date, he has taken well over 100 birds between the two states. He still looks forward each season like its his first.

Minnesota fisheries research manager aims to support scientists “in the trenches”

For as long as Patrick Schmalz can remember, fishing has been a part of his life, including as he grew up in southeast Wisconsin.
But it wasn’t until he was in college, studying to become a pharmacist, when he realized he could turn that fun, fishing pastime into a career.
“I didn’t even know you could get into this for a field. I just grew up doing stuff like this. I was lucky to have my grandfather and my dad take me fishing because I love it,” Schmalz said.
