Jeremiah Haas: Shared experiences is what the outdoors is about

Outdoor users have been known to get black eyes over the how and why we go into the woods or onto the water. Whether it is the latest cheating scandal at a fishing tournament, or the deer hunting personality that is ticketed with poaching because they let the prize of a “book” deer diminish their level of hunting ethics, it is easy to get down on the entire industry.
What traditionally was a sport, or lifestyle, that was handed down from generation to generation, the modernization of the outdoors is big business – and for some personalities, a gray line. With that, I would like to share with you one of those stories that will hopefully remind you why we go into the woods, or head to the water, hopeful to experience one of those days which will be recited to family and friends for years to come.

Electronic kill tags will be offered for fall turkey hunters in Michigan

In what is being viewed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources as a first step toward electronic harvest tags for game animals, the agency will begin offering electronic kill tags for the upcoming fall turkey season.
Fall turkey hunters will be able to buy turkey licenses through an app on their cell phone, and will not have to wait for a physical kill tag to arrive through the mail. They’ll be able to fill out the kill tag on their phones. Buying the electronic license will allow “ease of access,” explained Adam Bump, the upland game bird specialist with the DNR Wildlife Division.

Deerassic Classic in Ohio hits the ground on Aug. 2

When it comes to the Deerassic Classic, A.J. Burga has been involved with the annual outdoor expo since it hit the ground two decades ago.
Literally.
“This will be my ninth Classic officially,” said Burga, who this year takes over as the director of the Classic and Expo. “It’s kind of hard to believe. Prior to that, I actually worked for the Classic, driving tractors. So, I’ve really been a part of this place for probably 17 years.”
