Michigan Legislature approves $1M for Traverse City fish passage

The Michigan Legislature approved a $1 million grant for the Great Lakes Fishery Commission to build FishPass, a facility on the Boardman River at Traverse City.
The new facility will replace the lowermost dam on the river, which was in danger of failing, but will also allow fish passage upstream. FishPass is designed to allow desirable species to get upstream, but prevent undesirable species – i.e. sea lamprey – from doing the same.

Outdoor Observations: New wildlife museum open to the public in Clare, Michigan

A brand new wildlife museum and education center is open to the public adjacent to Jay’s Sporting Goods in Clare, Mich.
An agreement between Jay and Jeff Poet, owners of Jay’s Sporting Goods in Clare and Gaylord, and philanthropist Wayne Webber has brought Webber’s collection of some 300-plus game mounts to a new facility in Clare. The 16,500-square-foot Jay’s & Webber Wildlife & Education Center opened to the public on Friday, July 5. The nonprofit center is set to educate and entertain both kids and adults about wildlife, conservation, and the important role hunters play in conservation.

Notes off a soiled cuff: True Sunday hunting opportunity likely to become reality for Pennsylvania hunters

A few issues ago, in this space, I commented on the partisan nature of the vote to move the Sunday hunting bill through the state House of Representatives, prompting an angry reader to call and complain about us supporting one of the parties.
He was dead wrong – we weren’t. Now the other party pushed a Sunday hunting bill through the Senate and a compromise between the legislation adopted by the two chambers is expected.

Chesapeake Bay striped bass need a summer vacation

There’s a shift happening in Chesapeake Bay angling.
“People are pivoting, and they should be,” said David Sikorski, executive director of the Coastal Conservation Association in Maryland. “It used to be all stripers all the time. I find now more people view angling as an experience on the water, versus needing to target an exact species.”
Sikorski is worried about the dire state of the striped bass population.

Bradford County, Pa., hunting camp celebrates 100 years

Steve Watkins grew up in Monroeton, Bradford County, Pa., where his grandparents owned the Marcy Hotel, a popular local landmark.
He and his father hunted bears in the region’s “endless” mountains, and his grand-uncle was a founding member of the Monroeton Gun Club, a 75-acre camp in the midst of 26,000-acre State Game Land 12 on Barclay Mountain.
Although the original cabin is gone, the club is very much alive and celebrating its centennial with a members-only pig roast July 20.

Outdoor Writers of Ohio, Division of Wildlife get word out on Ohio’s record fish program

In an eureka moment, the several decades-old Outdoor Writers of Ohio (OWO) stepped into the 21st century regarding its slightly less young Ohio Record Fish Program.
The Outdoor Writers of Ohio is the statewide nonprofit organization of professional journalists – mostly Ohioans – who specialize in the ever-widening scope of the outdoors. “OWO”– as it is known less formally – is the only such body that keeps the official record fish list for any state, including Ohio.
