Socialization is key to having your hunting puppy prepared to face the world

Just a few days after bringing into my home my black Labrador puppy five years ago, I decided it was time to take her out on the town to meet some friends.
Our first stop was my local bank, usually not a busy place and with a lineup of bank tellers I knew well. Truth is, I just wanted to show off the 8-week-old pup I’d named Liza.
I didn’t bother to see if there was a “no pets” sign on the door; it was loyal customer me, and a cute-as-heck puppy, after all. Upon entry, we were greeted with smiles and “oohs” from the gallery. Except for Melissa, who pointed to the sign, explained the “no pets” rule, and stared me right back out the door.

Steve Piatt: Soaring temperatures force an audible in plan to fish New York’s Ausable River

On paper, this trip was going to be special. Back to the Adirondacks, and back to the West Branch of the Ausable River, which I proudly called my home water during our 16 years up there.
Two days of fishing, plying my favorite stretches of the river, nymph fishing the pocket water and, perhaps in the evening, switching to dry flies – maybe even Green Drake or Coffin Fly patterns in sizes easy for me to see on the water.
It would be just like old times, like reconnecting with an old friend, picking up the conversation just as we left it years ago.

Jeremiah Haas: From seeking walleyes to tuna, fishing is a universal passion

Many of us can remember the first time we had a fishing pole in hand, or at least we have seen the pictures of us doing so as toddlers. Whether you are in the Quad Cities, Europe, Brazil, or Thailand, nearly all anglers can speak a universal language – fishing.
I was fortunate to experience that love of angling recently in Hawaii aboard a charter trolling for tuna, mahi, kingfish, and marlin.

Wisconsin Wardens at Work: Zone 1 turkey hunter gets surprise call in Zone 3

A licensed hunter pursuing turkeys in the Black River State Forest in Jackson County, Wis., on opening day of the very first season, April 17, heard an unusual call. More accurately, the hunter received an unusual call. The subject answered – not with a diaphragm or slate call, but by using his voice while speaking into his own cell phone.
On the other end of the wireless line was a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) field warden, Theodore Doellman, who was just trying to get a fix on the hunter’s location, understanding the man would be decked out in camouflage.

Bear population, diet are focus of Michigan study

Multiple bear research projects are underway in Michigan. They focus on better estimating the population on Drummond Island, ways to mitigate nuisance issues in the Baldwin Bear Management Unit, and the influence of bait on bear diets.
On Drummond Island, Department of Natural Resources staff are using a trail camera grid and bears fitted with GPS collars to get a better idea of how far the animals roam and a more accurate population estimate that could sway license quotas, Cody Norton, the DNR’s bear specialist, told Michigan Outdoor News.
