Thanks to cameras, Pittsburgh residents seeing bears

Mary Mele Abel awoke June 8 to find Ring camera footage of a black bear lumbering through the backyard of her Pittsburgh home on the edge of Frick Park.
Although she had once captured video of a deer that had fallen into her fish pond, the images of a bruin in the wee hours of the morning was a little surreal.
“It was unbelievable, since we live in the city and the houses are so close together here,” said Abel.

Lake Ontario’s Eastern Basin offers a premier smallmouth fishery; here’s how to catch them

National bass tournament trails laud Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River as the premiere smallmouth destination in the country, and for good reason. These professionals come to northern New York and with a mere two-to-three days of practice proceeding a tournament and they manage to find bass and bring in five-fish daily limits that average 25 pounds.
The good news is that you don’t have to be a professional angler to enjoy these fish. Simply consider location, seasonal movement patterns and presentation.

Michigan House bill allows hunter safety course exemption for veterans, residents with concealed pistol permits

Michigan lawmakers are considering legislation to provide exemptions to the state’s hunter safety requirements, and to designate the wood duck as Michigan’s official duck, though prospects for passage are unclear.
Both bills were introduced in April and have remained in committee since. Lawmakers adjourned for summer break in late June and aren’t expected to return for weeks.

Steve McComas: Lakes have solutions to their own problems

Lake creatures have evolved over millions of years, with their survival skills honed over the ages. I’m seeing this play out this year.
Fish pre-date us by a long-shot. In fact, sturgeon, one of the most primitive of the existing fish species, were present when dinosaurs roamed the land more than 100 million years ago. Bass and walleyes evolved later and added a few additional special features. Fish evolution proved their adaptability, within limits.

Ryan Rothstein: Here are some reasons why your arrow isn’t hitting the bull’s-eye

One of my favorite things about vertical bows is that, despite the tremendous technological advances of the past few decades, it still takes tremendous dedication to consistently place an arrow where you want it. Even with high let-off compound bows, high-tech releases, and range-finding fiber optic sights, a dozen things still have to go exactly right to hit the 10-ring.
I know as well as anyone that September will be here in the blink of an eye. If you’re having a bit of trouble grouping your arrows in the center ring, here are the most likely reasons why.

Ohio’s Middle Harbor project to benefit many fish and wildlife species, along with outdoor users

The Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife has started a project to restore wetland vegetation across 300 acres of Middle Harbor in East Harbor State Park. The project began in April with a completion date later this year.
The Middle Harbor wetland restoration project includes dredging a channel from the center of the harbor to the outlet on the north side of the area to allow management of water levels.
