Mallard numbers dropping in Great Lakes Region, research suggests farm-raised birds could be partly to blame

Hunters used to take mallards for granted as their numbers were high and populations stable. Their status, however, has changed in recent years.
The percent change in mallard harvest between the 2020-2022 mean versus the 1999-2008 mean has been: -40.2 % in the Pacific Flyway, -48% in the Central Flyway, -55.7% in the Mississippi Flyway, and -58.7% in the Atlantic Flyway. Overall, harvest declined 51.1% across the country when comparing those two periods.

Johnsonburg’s Rolfe Beagle Club in Pennsylvania honors ‘Big Jim’ Pennington Sr.

“Big Jim” Pennington Sr., of Johnsonburg, Pa., was a mainstay of the Rolfe Beagle Club in northern Elk County for almost 60 years of the club’s 78 years of existence.

Ag secretary joins educator to raise awareness of Pennsylvania’s hardwood forests

Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding joined Danville Area High School agriculture teacher and forester Van Wagner at Blue Knob State Park in Bedford County recently to raise awareness of Pennsylvania’s hardwood forests, and the investments of the Shapiro administration in agriculture and recreation to help grow Pennsylvania’s economy.
“The value of our forests extends far beyond the $39 billion our hardwoods industry feeds into our economy every year,” Redding said.

Volunteers needed to count Pennsylvania’s birds for atlas

Those birds you see in the backyard, around camp, while hiking or otherwise outside? They’re more important than you think.
Reporting your observations of them is, too.
The Game Commission, together with Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, is conducting the third Pennsylvania Bird Atlas in state history. Between now and February 2029, it will document what birds live in Pennsylvania, where and in what numbers.

CWD rates in Pennsylvania’s south-central counties nearing that of hardest-hit areas of the country

Prior research has identified 10 different strains of chronic wasting disease, the neurological condition killing white-tailed deer in Pennsylvania and around the world.
The expanding range of CWD in North America and its presence in South Korea, Canada and Scandinavian countries could result in millions of infected cervids – primarily deer and elk – with novel strains continuing to emerge, according to the findings of researchers at the University of Alberta and other institutions, and published in Cell and Tissue Research.

38 dogs were close to drowning on a Mississippi lake, but fishermen responded with quite a catch

By the time fishermen spotted the first head bobbing above the water, the 38 dogs were exhausted and struggling to stay alive.
The hound dogs had plunged into a large Mississippi lake while chasing a deer, a diversion during a fox hunt. Bob Gist, who was fishing on the lake, knew they had no chance.
“A deer can swim the Mississippi River, and those dogs are not going to catch a deer in the water,” he recalled Friday.
