Volunteers needed in northeastern Minnesota counties for DNR loon survey

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is seeking volunteers to help monitor the loon population in Aitkin, Cook, Crow Wing, Itasca and Lake counties.
Volunteers are needed for a minimum of one morning during the June 28 through July 8 monitoring period, to count the number of adult and juvenile loons on pre-selected lakes.
For more than 20 years, with the assistance of hundreds of volunteer observers, the DNR has gathered information about common loon numbers on more than 600 lakes distributed among six regions, or “index areas,” throughout the state.

Pennsylvania Game Commission seeks feedback from antlerless deer license buyers

The Pennsylvania Game Commission announced in mid-June that it is asking hunters to provide feedback on their antlerless deer license buying experience this summer.
After the agency received a black eye in a highly publicized online license-sales snafu last summer, it revamped the process. This summer, when license sales got underway June 24, antlerless deer licenses became available only for the three wildlife management units where demand is highest – units 1B, 2G and 3A.

CWD areas expand in Pennsylvania due to new detections

The Pennsylvania Game Commission recently announced the expansion of several chronic wasting disease management areas due to new detections of the disease.
Disease Management Area 2 will expand following the detection of CWD in several road-killed deer along its eastern boundary. The boundary will generally expand east to state Route 94, east along U.S. Route 30, and north along the west shore of the Susquehanna River to meet the current boundary.

DNR to host eight deer population meetings in western Iowa this July to discuss declining herd numbers

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hosting eight meetings in Western Iowa to discuss the status of the region’s deer herd as population levels have fallen in recent years. The meetings are open to the public.
State wildlife experts say there are likely multiple factors that have contributed to the decline in the number of deer on the landscape and it might take a multilevel approach for the herd to recover.
