Minnesota’s Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council members tour sites of Lock and Dam deterrent, new Keystone WMA

Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council members recently toured two locations funded by the Outdoor Heritage Fund. The sites included Lock and Dam 5 in Minnesota City and Keystone Wildlife Management Area in Hugo and May Township.
The tour began at Lock and Dam 5, where $12 million was recommended by the LSOHC and approved by the Minnesota Legislature to construct a deterrent preventing Asian carp passage. The funding became available after the February 2024 state budget forecast revealed an additional $12 million available from the fund.

Top-scoring bear from Michigan in 2023 aged at more than 20 years old

J.B. Martin from Kimball, in St. Clair County, Mich., shot the highest-scoring black bear from 2023 that was entered in state records maintained by Commemorative Bucks of Michigan.

He killed the trophy bruin on Sept. 11 in the U.P.’s Ontonagon County while hunting over bait.

The skull from that bear scored 21-8/16, according to CBM. Bear skulls have to measure a minimum of 18 to qualify for state records.

Minnesota DNR creel surveys offer valuable info from anglers

Each year, thousands of Minnesota anglers encounter creel clerks who record details about the day’s fishing activity. But what’s it all about? How is that information used?
In short, the information gathered through these interactions provides data not available through other management activities such as netting surveys.
“It’s really important,” said Brad Parsons, DNR Fisheries Section manager, “and we wish we could do more creel surveys than we do.”

Ohio’s commercial fishing is a heavily scrutinized business

At the annual Ohio Sea Grant Charter Captain Conference in March, Lake Erie Law Enforcement Supervisor Matt Leibengood gave a summary of his crew’s 2023 efforts on the lake, which included an extensive look at how much the commercial netters are monitored.
A great deal of the Division of Wildlife’s monitoring is conducted with the use of electronic vessel tracking technology that follows the movements of all the trap net boats in real time using GPS tracking “pingers.” This reporter recently accompanied Law Enforcement Investigator Jason Hadsell as he demonstrated the effectiveness of the vessel monitoring system, which told him where the active trap net boats were, permitting Hadsell to meet them as they arrived at their docks.

Tom Venesky: Litter from the sky finds its way to wild places

There is no such thing as unspoiled wilderness in Pennsylvania.
Not anymore.
Pristine areas untouched by man no longer exist. There are places that no matter how remote and rugged they are, man’s impact can be seen and felt. And it’s not necessarily the result of the typical forms of encroachment – urban sprawl, natural gas drilling, timbering, etc. This impact originates with harmless intentions yet a high degree of naivety.

Streams of Thought: Vacation across Minnesota features some fishing, plenty of reconnecting

Some people vacation in Europe. Others, in exotic locations in Mexico. Some of my friends spend a week fishing in Ontario – a place to which I’ve accompanied them more than 25 times – each year in June.
I didn’t join them this year, when, by Dave’s count, he and boatmates Ryan and Daron boated 800-plus walleyes in seven days of fishing. Sounds exhausting to me. I seldom tally my catch and I prefer lengthy naps after shore lunch. This year, I went to Appleton. Not directly, but rather by way of a more circuitous route.
