Authorities have found the bodies of two men who went over a waterfall while fishing near the Minnesota-Ontario border last month.
Deputies found the remains of Melvin Grams, 40, of Lino Lakes, on Monday in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness of northern Minnesota, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department announced. The agency located 41-year-old Cambridge resident Jesse Melvin Haugen’s body last Friday.
During the Minnesota DNR’s “targeted culling” of whitetails – conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services – late this past winter, in three areas of the state, a total of 411 whitetails were killed.
Seventeen of those animals tested positive for chronic wasting disease. Further, all “positive” samples were taken in what the DNR refers to as the “south block,” which includes an area in the south metro, along with the south-eastern region.
For the first time in nearly 30 years, duck hunters in the Lower 48 states could have the chance to shoot three pintails a day as soon as the 2025-26 season – a possible outcome of an interim population and harvest strategy being put into use by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
However, it’s important to note that despite a change in the model, the daily bag limit for all future seasons still depends on pintail populations and habitat conditions on the breeding grounds.

If you’re a private landowner in Pennsylvania, watch closely to what happens when state House Bill 2106 comes up for a floor vote.
And be prepared to be upset.
The bill repeals the prohibition on Sunday hunting, and it recently passed the House Game and Fisheries Committee, paving the way for a floor vote. In committee, every Democrat member voted for the bill, while all Republicans were unified in opposition. But the issue with the bill isn’t really about Sunday hunting. The problem with the proposal is it violates the U.S. Constitution.

Several weeks ago, a published abstract entitled: “Rare and Fatal Brain Disease in Two Deer Hunters Heightens Concerns about CWD” appeared in the journal Neurology.
Not surprisingly, it was picked up by the popular press and created quite a stir. In the end, it turned out that the data didn’t really warrant “heightened concerns” for a variety of reasons (e.g., CWD was only identified in the hunter’s area after both hunters were diagnosed). Now, another paper, this time in Emerging Infectious Diseases, suggests that the species barrier is so strong that CWD spill-over may be an unwarranted concern.
Without question, these findings are good news. But at the same time (this is important), the data are just “another brick in the wall.” They are not proof that CWD can’t infect humans.
