A tireless volunteer, Carol Moncrieff Rose is Michigan Outdoor News’ 2024 Person of the Year

Who could have imagined that a little girl dressed up like Annie Oakley would one day hold the highest volunteer position in natural resource management in Michigan – chair of the state Natural Resources Commission?
That’s exactly what happened to Hillman resident Carol Moncrieff Rose.
Along the way she volunteered for countless conservation-related positions and activities. For her tireless commitment to conservation and the management of Michigan’s vast natural resources, Carol Rose is the 2024 Michigan Outdoor News Person of the year.

Bass fishing has never been better at Alum Creek in Ohio’s Delaware County

Alum Creek Reservoir is one of the bigger – and better – public spots for fishing and boating in central Ohio.
And that’s no big secret since this 3,192-acre lake in Delaware County gets plenty of pressure, angling-wise and otherwise. The northern portion of this long, serpentine lake – north of the Cheshire Road bridge – is where anglers will want to focus their efforts.

The things that Fred Lilly does for people in the outdoors comes from pure love of his fellow human being.

Surviving ash trees may hold key to saving species

The invasive insect emerald ash borer is killing ash trees at an unprecedented rate in the United States, and now five North American species of ash are considered critically endangered, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
But a small percentage are surviving, and research by Forest Service scientists suggests that those trees may hold the key for saving the species.

Nature Smart: A lark that wears horns

The population of ground-nesting birds is steadily decreasing. In North America, we have hundreds of bird species that nest on the ground. Prairie birds such as Eastern and Western meadowlarks are good examples. If you are older than 50, you likely remember hearing meadowlarks in your youth, but since then, the population of meadowlarks dramatically has declined.

Commission allows expanded fracking on Ohio public lands

There may be fracking in Keen Wildlife Area in Harrison County, following action by the Ohio Oil and Gas Land Management Commission on May 20.

The commission approved an application by Texas-based Encino Acquisition Partners to drill on the 85-acre wildlife area. Encino must now go through the regular permitting process of the ODNR Division of Oil and Gas Resources Management. But approval of the application by the Texas company to drill on the wildlife area did not come without protests by the Save Ohio Parks group.
