Deer population concerns rising on Ohio’s South Bass Island in Lake Erie

South Bass Island ’s population of deer has expanded exponentially from the one doe that was on the Lake Erie island in 1999. Island residents are wondering if some type of control is needed. (Photo by John Hageman)

In 1999, the first white-tailed deer in some time arrived on South Bass Island in Lake Erie. The young doe was so tame that she would approach people and follow vehicles during daylight hours.
When Put-in-Bay, Ohio, Mayor John Blatt held a naming contest, she was dubbed “Millie” – short for Millennium, the milestone event that was on the mind of many that year.
