Commentary: Constant bickering among Pennsylvania’s older hunters is turning off youth

Battle lines have been drawn, sides chosen, and a plethora of issues are ripe for the picking for one to latch onto and contribute to the divisiveness eating away at the very threads of the garb donned by the Pennsylvania “Orange Army” that will venture into the woods this fall.

A $10,543 fine rendered in Wisconsin Columbia County elk case from 2021

A Portage man who shot a bull elk on Nov. 20, 2021, opening day of the gun-deer season that year, finally saw his case adjudicated in Columbia County Circuit Court last month with a sentence that requires $10,543 to cover a fine and court costs.
Chase Emerson Steinhoff, 26, of Portage, was placed on probation for 18 months and must retake a hunter education course. He must submit a DNA sample to the court and his hunting and trapping license privileges were revoked for five years.

Dock dues on Minnesota public waters: Genius? Or the musings of a madman?

I think this is a novel idea. Curious if you agree. Here’s the idea: The DNR should start charging dock space rent on public waters.
You might already be rolling your eyes. You might already be sending a nasty comment to me for being so dumb. Fine, we all are entitled to our opinions, you and I. Unless your mind is closed, hear me out. Almost every lake home or cabin has a dock occupying public water that’s owned by the public for the public’s use. There are thousands of docks on state lakes.

Creating a new rifleman with the M-1 Garand

“In my opinion, the M-1 Rifle is the greatest battle implement ever devised.”
— Lieutenant General George S. Patton, Jr.
The revered and feared U.S. Army tank commander wrote that oft-repeated statement in the final months of World War II, on Jan. 26, 1945, in an official letter to Major General Levin H. Campbell, Jr., who was the War Department’s Chief of Ordnance. Patton went on to praise the effectiveness of other U.S. armaments as well, but the words about the M-1 Garand rifle stood out.

Try this orange test for sticking fish hooks

What seemed to be half my “off-season” free time used to focus on sharpening my fishing hooks.
I sharpened all my old hooks and as I stocked up with new lures for the next season. Each of the hook points on each of the fresh-from-the-factory hooks got a few strokes on my whetstone to get their points finely tuned and ready for spring. The technology used to manufacture fishing hooks that were “sharper than a tack” didn’t exist, at least for the stock hooks many lure makers used to finish their products.
