DNR will conduct a drawing in late September for three youth to hunt deer during the Illinois youth firearm deer season Oct. 7-9 at Coffeen Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area in Montgomery County. The drawing will take place at 10 a.m. Sept. 29 at the park. The special youth hunt will take place at the park’s upland management area. Participating youth must have a valid Montgomery County youth firearm deer permit.

More than 100 high school anglers from 22 states were hoping to reel in scholarships from college coaches at the third annual Skeeter Bassmaster High School Combine on Wheeler Lake in Decatur, Ala.
The event, which took place Sept. 15-18, is seen as an opportunity to meet individually with prospective anglers and evaluate talent from a wider swath of the country, which is critical for coaches. At least one Illinois college was set to participate.

Located in the Shawnee National Forest within LaRue-Pine Hill Research Natural Area, is a one-of-a-kind place that locals call Snake Road.
Snake Road is a 2½-mile-long gravel road that is closed to vehicles and open to foot traffic in observance of the biannual reptile and amphibian movement to and from the limestone cliffs and LaRue Swamp. Snake Road is great for viewing snakes in their natural habitat and is also a great place to view wildlife and local flora. Twice a year, the LaRue-Pine Hills reptiles and amphibians experience seasonal movements; in the spring they leave their winter shelter and head to the swamps, and in the fall, they return to the limestone bluffs to stay over winter.
Bass are never a preferred food item. Muskie predation on large adult gizzard shad is highly desirable on Mill Creek Lake to thin this size group, with white suckers a potential valuable diet item to enhance the growth of large muskie.

The rut gets all the attention, but if I know where a big buck is living, I’d rather hunt him in late September or early October than any other time of season.
In September his world is small. He’s found some bedding cover where he feels safe. He hasn’t worried about hunters in more than eight months. His world consists of sleeping, eating as much as possible and avoiding the occasional predator. If you can get even basic intelligence on this buck, I’m convinced the first few weeks of fall are the absolute best time to tag him.
