Positive thinking: ducks don’t read reports before migrating

Duck hunters up and down the state looking for positive news heading into the new season should not pay much attention to the latest report by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
As the late Illinois waterfowl biologist Frank Bellrose used to say from his Havana office, “Ducks don’t read before deciding to migrate.” That analysis was repeated by another Frank – Delta Waterfowl Chief Scientist Frank Rohwer – in wake of the 2023 USFWS Waterfowl Status Report.

Commentary: Women in the fishing world a worthy cause to pursue

From community youth fishing events to statewide junior bass fishing tournaments to Hooked On Fishing, Not On Drugs events to Pathways to Fishing programs, there is no shortage of efforts to introduce young people to sport fishing.

The Iowa 9-point was one I’d been after for weeks and, while he wasn’t one of the giants the Hawkeye State is known for, I wasn’t much of a bowhunter, either. Barely 19 years old and trying to figure out public-land whitetails, I’d decided most any deer wearing antlers was good enough for me. I’d spotted the white-racked buck – a broad-shouldered wraith that lived in a tangle of Mississippi River bottomland – once or twice and wanted him badly.
