Tribal walleye take below quota from Minnesota’s Lake Mille Lacs

The bands’ quota for the central-Minnesota lake this year is 74,700 pounds of walleyes, and as of mid-May, the harvest was about 57,600 pounds, according to Tom Jones, the Minnesota DNR’s fisheries treaty coordinator. (Stock photo)

Tribal fishers from the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, the Fond du Lake Band of Lake Superior, and six Ojibwe bands in Wisconsin combined to harvest approximated three-fourths of their walleye quota from Lake Mille Lacs this spring.

Minnesota DNR officials say tribal fishing mostly wrapped up just prior to the state’s May 13 fishing opener.
