New York town will ban hunting, trapping at its parks after February incident

The Oneida County town of New Hartford’s board recently voted to bar hunting and trapping activities at its public parks in reaction to a February incident in which five beaver carcasses were found along the Philips A. Rayhill Memorial Recreational Trail, which is adjacent to a large mitigation pond.
“We are not against gun owners or hunters or trappers,” town supervisor Paul Miscione said. “We just can’t have it in our parks and playgrounds.”

Staffers from the Minnesota DNR West Metro fisheries office began the annual muskie egg take on Lake Rebecca early this month. It started on May 1, and the process typically requires a week or more to reach the department’s goal of 700,000 eggs.
The annual egg take has taken place on 254-acre Lake Rebecca since 1987, and it’s been stocked since 1982 with the Leech Lake strain of muskies.
