New York Outdoor News editor’s spring gobbler stirs record beard debate

New York Outdoor News editor Dan Ladd shot this double-bearded turkey while hunting May 2, 2023 in Warren County, N.Y. One hair on the bird's beard measured 14.50 inches, and another measured 13.75 inches, but both fell out not long after the measuring process. That has created some debate on if the bird could be officially certified in the state record books through the NWTF. (Contributed photo courtesy of Dan Ladd)
New York Outdoor News Editor Dan Ladd has become a diehard turkey hunter, so much so it ranks a close second to his true passion of hunting big-woods bucks in the Adirondacks. He’s just thrilled when his busy schedule allows him to be out there before sunrise, and happy to put his tag on any tom. But a recent harvest – a double-bearded longbeard with an emphasis on “long” – has triggered a bit of debate among the turkey-hunting fraternity.
