Veteran New York beaver trapper, Les Wedge, reflects on another trapping season

Retired DEC fisheries biologist and NYS Trapper Education Instructor Les Wedge remains an active beaver trapper at age 77. He said he traps between 20 to 30 beavers annually. (Photo by Don Therre)
Beaver activity really picks up during the early spring, Wedge added, because the adult females kick out the 2-year-olds to make room for the new litter coming. Wedge is a member of the Cortland County Trappers Association. He teaches the DEC’s trapper certification course, is mentoring several young trappers and periodically gives talks to various groups about trapping. The following are excerpts from a recent interview with him.
