Spring bird migration lagging behind schedule in the Dakotas

Ice and snow have kept snow geese and other waterfowl from migrating through eastern South Dakota so far this spring. But the delay in migration likely means that when warmer weather does arrive, the migration is expected to be massive and intense. (Photo by John Pollmann)

Winter conditions that have affected eastern South Dakota since December are proving to be a roadblock for those waterfowl looking to migrate into and through the area this spring, but the doors may start to swing open with a forecast increase in temperatures as the calendar turns from March to April.
