The story behind the robust walleye population is an interesting one. These are a genetic strain of walleyes unique to the Cannon River that’s persisted in Sarah and a few other southern Minnesota lakes for decades.
I give a thumbs down to HB 4135. Senate Bill 52, on the other hand, I’ll give a thumbs up.
The proposed consent decree over Great Lakes treaty water fishing undoes a $14 million investment made by the state of Michigan and tribes in the previous decree and represents an about face by the DNR on gillnets.
This jeopardizes an already dwindling fishery resource and both the tribal and recreational angler’s opportunity to fish the Great Lakes.

An Upper Peninsula lawmaker believes the Department of Natural Resources has a “responsibility” to re-establish gray wolves in the Lower Peninsula.
Republican Rep. Greg Markkanen (R-Hancock), introduced a resolution last month calling for the DNR to use a portion of the Upper Peninsula’s abundant wolf population to re-establish a self-sustaining population below the bridge, along with House Bill 4102 to make it happen. The Hancock lawmaker insists bill is a ‘serious proposal.’
A total of 4,966 deer from the late bow season were registered statewide last year, 558 of which were arrowed in the Upper Peninsula and 1,418 from the northern Lower Peninsula.
