New York DEC: Wolf killed in 2021 was consuming a wild diet

The Department of Environmental Conservation, through the New York State Museum, has conducted further DNA analysis on a wolf shot in Otsego County, in 2021, and determined that the animal is likely a Great Lakes wolf that consumed a natural and wild diet. (Photo courtesy of NYSDEC)

Further testing conducted by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation indicates that a wolf shot mistakenly by a coyote hunter late in 2021 was consuming a wild diet. The test confirms the animal was not raised as a pet by humans and then released into the wild.
The 85-pound canine was killed in Cherry Valley, Otsego County, and Initial tests showed it was a coyote, but further testing indicated it was primarily of wolf origin.
