Long considered a nuisance fish – caught incidentally while fishing for “proper” table fare such as walleyes – eelpout have nonetheless caught on with both anglers and epicures during the past decade or so. As a kid, I can remember seeing piles of them frozen into the ice outside homemade skid-houses full of anglers playing gin-rummy, rattle reels set for the evening walleye bite. Much has changed.
